Women s Empowerment Organization For Women - 1492 Words

â€Å"We are all afraid. We are all confident. We are all warriors on this road of life, and we’re all a mess sometimes. Girls are multifaceted, complicated, layered, and emotional beings. So who better to understand us than other girls?† (Jones, 2014: 19). When I arrived at this line in the first chapter of I Am That Girl I picked up a pen, quit reading, and started studying. It quickly became apparent how this book laid the foundation of the global women’s empowerment organization I Am That Girl, which seeks to raise the standards of how girls both view and treat themselves, each other and the world. The organization believes that by building a community for women to be seen, heard and belong they are giving women something bigger than themselves to stand for and creating a healthier and more powerful society. I Am That Girl serves as a â€Å"safe space† for women through over 170 chapters worldwide reaching over 5 million people. The organization addres ses the emotional, mental and physical well being of women both individually and as a gender, and by doing so raises the questions: does addressing gender inequality in this group and groups like it change the perceptions women have towards it? Are women becoming empowered in â€Å"safe spaces?† If so, what are they becoming empowered to do? Recent research done by Joan Huber (2007) shows how men have dominated the majority of human societies throughout history.
